Now that IBM is about to release a fix to the problem, now that we wiped the hard disk clean and completely reinstalled Windows and Notes and all the other apps on the machine of the one user in our organization who was experiencing this problem, because F9 didn't work and neither did any of the other workarounds, that user figured out what was causing it. He speaks Spanish. He installed a third-party spelling dictionary called Babylon 9, which interacts with text editors like Lotus Notes. He ran Babylon 9, then Notes. New memo. No buttons. He exited Babylon 9. New memo. Buttons. Ran it again. New memo. No buttons. Exited again. Buttons. Hey, a pattern!
